A Collaborative Motorsports Course offered by Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis and Winston Salem State University.

Course Concept:
This course involves an intense, hands-on approach to the fast paced world of motorsport racing within the United States . The course is designed to provide students with basic knowledge about the different facets of the motorsports industry. Specifically, the course will take place in the centers of activity for the top open-wheel and stock-car racing series in this country today. The course will recognize the strengths of the two participating universities, (Motorsport Management at WSSU and Engineering and Technology Aspects of Motorsport at IUPUI). This knowledge will be coupled with first hand visits to the two primary centers of motorsports in the United States , North Carolina and Indiana .
Students from IUPUI and WSSU will travel from their respective universities for an unparalleled experiential learning opportunity within the motorsports industry. Students will see the inside operations of both NASCAR and Indy Racing League team shops, as well as tour some of the most famous tracks within the sport including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Lowe's Motor Speedway. Participants in the course will attend some of the most spectacular events in American motorsports. Students from the different institutions will also be teamed together to focus on specific projects related to the industry.
From the management prospective, topics of study will include historical perspectives of racing; an examination of the different venues available both in the United States and throughout the world; career opportunities in motorsports; the role of marketing and sponsorship in motorsports; and professional associations and governing bodies. The technical aspect of the course will involve safety technology as applied to the driver, the vehicle and the track as well as aspects of performance technology including aerodynamics, chassis dynamics and data acquisition. Guest lecturers from different aspects of the industry will discuss their responsibilities and how they were able to successfully pursue a career within motorsports.

SPRING 2007: ECET 499 - Data Acquisition in Motorsports (3 credits)
This course will provide an overview of the motorsports industry and the role of data acquisition. Chassis, engine, and driver sensors, communications systems and data analysis software will be discussed along with common activities performed by personnel working in the data acquisition role. There are no course prerequisites and it will meet Monday and Wednesday, 6:00-8:40 pm for the first 8 weeks of the semester. SPRING 2007: Purdue Grand Prix Go-Kart (extra curricular project)
This project will be run by the IUPUI Motorsports Club, using the kart successfully built and run in the 2006 race by MET 414 Seniors. To get involved, contact club president, Lynsey Tilton, ldtilton@iupui.edu.
SPRING 2007: MET 414 (3 credits – seniors only)

SUMMER I 2007: MET 299 – Introduction to Motorsports (3 credits)
This course will offer an introduction to the motorsports industry and what careers are available. Discussions will cover different types of racing, the role of sanctioning bodies, how rules governing the sport are developed, and what the future holds for motorsports. The class will feature guest speakers from industry and will offer field trips to see how things operate behind the scenes. The course prerequisite is any one of the following: MET 211, CGT 211, OLS 274, ECET107, or permission of the instructor. The course will be scheduled for 3 evenings per week, however, it will only meet twice on some weeks to allow for optional field trips on weekends. FALL 2007: MET 426 – Internal Combustion Engines (3 credits)
This course will cover subjects associated with internal combustion engines, with an emphasis on performance factors. Hands-on activities with engines and the school dynamometer are planned.
